Benefits of a Startup Chapter

Joining a BNI Startup Chapter (Core Group) can be a great move over joining an established chapter—especially if the goal is to help shape the culture, lock in a premium seat, and build a strong referral ecosystem from day one. Here are the key differences and benefits:

Benefits of joining a Startup Chapter (Core Group) vs. an Existing Chapter

1) Better chance to secure the “right” classification (seat)

In established chapters, many high-value seats may already be filled. In a core group, there’s often more opportunity to lock in a prime classification early.

2) Build the chapter around a strong Contact Sphere (by design)

Startup chapters can intentionally recruit complementary professions so the group launches with balanced power teams (real estate/home services, legal/finance, health/wellness, etc.), instead of inheriting gaps.

3) More leadership opportunity and influence

Core group members typically have a bigger voice in:

  • Chapter culture and expectations
  • Visitor strategy and launch momentum
  • Meeting rhythm and accountability norms
  • Building a strong leadership team that will help run the meetings

This can be ideal for members who enjoy building something.

4) Early visibility and “founding member” momentum

Being there early can create fast trust and strong relationships, and “founding members” often become the go-to referral partners as the chapter grows.

5) Strong growth energy (and more visitors) during launch phase

Core groups are usually in an active growth mode, which often means:

  • More intentional invites and new prospects
  • More community buzz and excitement
  • More new connections quickly

6) More Hands-On Development and Education

A BNI Launch Director is coaching and leading the new members to launch the new chapter.  They are present and available to teach you how to be successful, find the resources, create strategies, develop new skills and understand how to network effeciently to grow your business effective using the BNI structured environment, tools and education.

7) A chance to avoid “legacy issues

Some established chapters and groups can have entrenched habits (good or bad). A startup group can set higher standards early—especially around referrals, participation, inviting visitors, attendance, and accountability.

Helpful Note: New chapters are continuously forming at BNI. We call these new chapters core groups. If you want details on getting involved, you can request Higgins to have the regional team contact you.
